A tribute to the Basque sculptor Eduardo Chillida, Homage to Chillida was a private selling exhibition held at Christie’s Mayfair, featuring works by a group of prominent international artists made in response to Chillida’s oeuvre. The exhibition book presented 45 sculptures, paintings and drawings, offering an insight into other artists’ work as well as into Chillida’s inspirations. Throughout his career Chillida explored ideas of materiality, light and nature. These concepts became the basis for the identity created for an exhibition in which the work of many of his contemporaries was displayed to reflect on Chillida’s influence.
The catalogue designed for the show aimed to mirror this curatorial view by seductively juxtaposing transparencies of Chillida’s works over images of the artworks he inspired. References to Chillida’s work informed the design: the monumental size of the book, details of texture, bright colours and bold sans serif typeface referred to the materiality of iron and the scale of the exhibition’s centrepiece, Chillida’s Buscando La Luz IV (Looking for Light IV). A die-cut cover title revealed the sky-blue inside pages, as a metaphor of the light and void – that were the focus of Chillida’s artistic exploration.
