Produced for St James's House in partnership with the History of Parliament Trust, Voice & Vote: Celebrating 100 Years of Votes for Women marked the centenary of the Representation of the People Act, which granted the vote to women in the UK for the first time.
To steer away from the colours that traditionally signified femininity – such as pink – a vibrant red-orange was proposed for this project. Standing out against black and white archival imagery, it aimed to symbolise the energy and courage of the Suffragettes. The bold, condensed typography drew on the assertive slogans forming the essence of the suffrage banners, while the cover – printed on real cloth – referenced the materiality and high quality of the fabrics used to create the banners. The cover title acts as a keyhole, revealing a snippet of the compelling collection of images included inside the book.
